September 3, 2009

There was no post yesterday. i was at the OEM presentation in Times Square to kick off National Preparedness Month. I met Commissioner Bruno and was joined by my friends Kathy, Toni and Bob Anderson. It felt good to be involved, but when it was all over they each had a place to go. I went home. I felt like no one needed me. Kathy took some pictures and I will write an article for the ALANYC newsletter.

Dorothy made arrangements for me to meet her CPA, but I have not called him yet. Also, I promised myself that I would print out the AICPA course on BCP and use that to devise an audit plan. I have not done that either.

I met with H yesterday who is worried about his job. He received a call from a colleague while on vacation that his job was posted on the intranet Poor guy is worried to death.

September 1, 2009

Today I will print out the AICPA BCP course and design an audit plan surroundng that. Then I will find two local CPA firms and call them for ideas on how to get started. Some networking.

August 31, 2009

Well, yesterday I took a CLE course in business continuty developemnt. I could have written it. I saved a copy and could use it as an outline if I ever make a presentation. I renewed my membership in ACP. Wednesday is the kick-off event in Times Square. Toni emailed Ira to see if he needs any volunteer help. I will meet Toni Kathy and Bob Anderson at Dukes at 9:30.

Now what? There are several events in the near future about BCP. I will go to them, but to what end? I really have to figure out an angle to tie the CPA in with the BCP Perhaps a speciality where I audit BCP plans? Perhaps I could write an audit program I wonder if there would be any benefit in contacting Susan Varisco?

I know they do that kind of stuff. I wonder if my credentials would be of benefit to her? Should I contact her for lunch? Let me do a bit more reasearch before contacting her. Will work on an audit plan

Friday August 28, 2009

Kathy Scorby contacted me that she has not heard from Ira about the Preparedness kick-off in Times Square next Thrusday. I emailled and called Ira but he nas not replied. It is hard to be his liaison with the legal community when he is not available.

I found some quotes yesterday about BCP and will put one on my LinkedIn. I need to figure out a way to tie in my CPA with BCP Somehow there has to be a way of using it to define risk analysis. I will have to look into that.

I should also check other CPA firms to see if they have a BCP component, especially the local New York Firms. I will get a list of those firms tomorrow at the office.

Thursday August 27, 2009

I found a line from the Association of American Pediatrics that I though was useful and sent it off, but heard nothing. I think I used the wrong emaail address. I put a comment on my Linkedin about showing compassion about managing people, but perhaps I shoud start putting comments about BCP. Where is that list of BCP quotes I one had. I went on the Deloitte web site and found nothing. I think I will pay the $100and join the ACP. I think the listing on my resume will help. Maybe I should reword the beginning of my resume to add something about BCP. I have not heard from Kim about the ALA BCP website. If I don't hear soon, I will email her again. If I hear nothing perhaps I can start a blog or my own website about BCP for law firms. Isee that the library has a free course "Growing your Business with a Website" for August 27, Yikes, that is today. I think it is probably too late to do it now.

I saw the movie last night Julia and Julia. Julia made a promise to herself to try all 524 of Julia Child's recepies in a one year period and blog about them. What could I blog about? The books I am reading? What is happening in New York City? What I saw in New York today? Yes maybe both of those, what I saw in New York today.

I had a meeting yesterday with Ed Bale of Cotton Mound. I really thoght he might be intersted in using me with his BCP program. But that was not the case. He just wantd to pick my brain. I found the Linedin not about a networking opportunity in mid September that I will attend. Also, I see that OEM is having a special thing at the Intrepid in Early September. I will attend that also. Oem sent me the list of members, but not where they are located. I might look into that and see if there is a mid-town group.

I also asked Dorothy if she would set me up with a networking interview with her CPA. I am sure she will do it.

I need to set up a breakfast with Henry and I need to call Midge.

I sent my recommendation to Kim for an ALANYC web page devoted to disaster recovery and business continuity. I hope she picks up and lets me do it.

I also should start tracking avian flu news and make daily updates to my colleagues. At a minimum I must add Ed Bale to my list immediately. I should be checking Linkedin daily for information on BCP and the flu.

By the way, we finished the book yesterday and sent it to the NYS Bar. I need to check out the rules of sharing space with other attorneys. I will start with the ethics resources.

And, Find out if Legal Management is still being publised. If so I should present an article for them

FRIDAY AUGUST 19, 2009

We finished the ALA book yesterday. That was good news. Tuesday, I pitched the idea of setting up a web page on the ALANYC website to deal with business continuity planning and disaster recovery. Kim, the president, liked the idea. I told her I would show her a sample. I have it pretty much outlined, I just have to finish it up. I could do that tomorrow at work.

At the meeting was my friend Henry. He had a friend call him about getting prepared for the Swine flu. He referred his friend to me. I am meeting him on Monday. I probably should prepare an outline for him as to what my recommendation would be. I could present it to him almost as an outline of what I propose. I will be meeting with Dorothy before that. I could show her and see what she thinks.

I will also ask Dorothy if she would set up a meeting with her CPA to discss what I have to do to get back in the business.

Also, I will have lunch with Amanda tomorrow, hopefully to get the book back on track..

I am trying to figure out how to position myself. Whether I should brand myself as an accounant looking for CPA work or whether I should continue as a legal administrator. I certainly love the legal administrator work and have a pretty good knowledge of it, but mostly for the smaller or midsize firms. But how do I find work. I could make myself available as a part time or per diem administrator for smaller firms. I do like to be indentified with a firm. But that may not be possible at my age. What could I do to be identified with a firm, but still be seen as viable at my age. That is where business continuity comes in. I will make another presentation to Kim tomorrow about having a page on the web site and she what she says.

I also have Linkedin. How should I position myself there? As a full range legal administrator or as a BCP specialist with extensive legal experienced who understands how law firms operae? But don't have any credentials in BCP how important is that? Not sure, but my contact with OEM certainly has some value.

Maybe Kathy at Hunton could help with this.

Should I meet with some CPA firms? I could start with Dorothy's CPA. I will email her today.

In regards to Wang Ayni's quote: I wonder how that works. And, what is extra nice? Isn't that redundant? Perhaps it means overly solicitous. If someone is overly solicitous it means that they are demanding and insistent. Apparently Over solicitous is not correct. So, how can kindness be a form of maniuplation? Perhaps it means that and extra dose of kindness, not one solicited nor expected, creates a sense of obligation to the giver.

Quote from Wang Ayni

Being extra nice to somone can be a form of manipulation - kindness is an exercise of power in its own right.
